While lacking the great soundtrack and voice, the graphics have been enhanced and the game plays as well as the original. Almost three years have passed since Adol had rescued Y's from the clutches of evil. Adol with his faithful companion Dogi were wandering from country to country. One day, a rumor lead them to return to Dogi's place of birth.
Something strange had happened in Felugana, fields were dying and becoming barren. Strange creatures hunted the people in the dark cloak of night. This did not discourage Adol and he plunged into his new journey. The sequel to one of the best P. Engine games ever, is now available in Japan! This time the game is played in a fast and furious side-scrolling battlefield. Tons of items and hours of exciting game play could make this the best CD available yet.
It is the third game in the Ys series of video games. The game is side scrolling instead of the previous games top-down view. Naturally, as the game progresses, you obtain greater armour and weapons, and also rings with magical properties which is similar to the magic system in Ys II - although here you have a limited 'ring power' to use them.
But setting aside those minor issues, Ys III delivers a very different but still compelling episode of this highly regarded action role-playing series. Sure, the side-on viewpoint makes the game feel far more linear than the first two, but it retains the quality that holds you and keeps you coming back until it is completed.
This is in no small measure due to the masterful arrangements of the music by Ryo Yonemitsu. I do not hate this but i definitely prefer the open world method. Visually the game does not improve in any way really. To be honest the sprites look average and the game scrolls weird like it runs in like 20fps. I played the game in Japanese thankfully since i a fluent in Japanese and everything there just sounds a lot more natural. This sequence here in this longplay can show you what i mean:.
Anyway, i just feel that it is a shame because it seems like Ys III just got less time for production and probably less money too. One point where the game does not fail me is the music. It is THAT good! This is just mind blowing stuff. I imagine that with an avarage soundtrack i mind have found this game boring. Maybe the OST is giving me the illusion that Ys III is a good game, although i do not wholly believe that it is definitely a part of it.
I cannot count on 1 hand the games i would give 10 for music but Ys III manages to do that which is really really special. Overall, Ys III is a good action-rpg that still could have become better with more production value and some time. The music however catapults this game to a whole other level as it is just mind blowing and among the best ever. In fact it is a very good game.
